Det å bake sjakkruter er for mange en kjær juletradisjon. De er ikke en av de tradisjonelle 7 slagene. Men min filosofi er at det er bedre å lage kaker man liker og som blir spist, enn å strengt holde seg til de tradisjonelle. Sjakkruter er enkle å bake og smaker veldig godt av sjokolade og vanilje.  Dessuten er de jo ganske morsomme å se på da, med sitt lille rutemønster.

Disse småkakene minner meg om min eldste venninne. Jeg kan huske helt fra barndommen at disse sto på hennes repertoar hver jul. Og så vidt jeg vet gjør de det ennå. Hun er og har alltid vært utrolig flink til å bake. Da vi var barn og skulle bake, så ble hennes kaker alltid høye, pene og gode. Mine derimot ble aldri verken høye eller pene, selv om de nok kunne smake OK. Det har sittet så godt i at det faktisk bare er de siste årene at jeg har begynt å bake igjen. Og det er fortsatt kaker jeg i stor ærefrykt holder meg unne fremdeles.

Ingredienser

  • 200 gr smør
  • 250 gr siktet hvetemel
  • 100 gr melis
  • 2 ts vaniljesukker
  • 2 ss kakao

Fremgangsmåte

Denne oppskriften gir ca. 70 kaker

Jeg pleier å dele ingrediensene i to og lage deigen i to omganger siden den skal ha to smaker. Lag den lyse først.

  • Sett ovnen på 175 grader
  • Kjør halvparten av melet, melisen og smøret sammen med vanlijesukkeret til et jevn smågrynete pulver i en kjøkkenmaskin. Hell det ut på benken og elt det sammen til en deig.
  • Gjør det samme med resten av melet, melisen, smøret og kakaoen.
  • Del hver av de deigene i to og rull ut lange pølser som er ca. 1,5 cm i diameter.
  • Du har nå to hvite og to brune pølser. Legg pølsene sammen brun og hvit ved siden av og oppå hverandre slik at de dannet sjakkrutemønster. Klem godt sammen. Skjær rullen i 0,5 cm skiver og legg på et stekebrett.
  • Stek kakene i ca. 10 minutter. Den hvite deigen skal ikke ta farge, så følg med på slutten.
  • Avkjøl på rist og oppbevar i kakeboks.
